war

A thousand years ago, a magical war was waged across the lands, ending in the complete elimination of magic.

quotes Locke: My grandma used to tell me bedtime stories about magical machines...[She] told me that humans and espers once lived side by side... quotes

The War of the Magi erupted over a conflict between humans and espers one thousand years ago. Over time, humans had become jealous and filled with an urge to discover great power, power that they knew the espers had. Espers, were taken captive and used for war purposes. Research began and processes were developed to gain this power from the espers. The results of the experiment were magically-infused machines...and magically-infused humans.

But the price of acquiring such power was great: the process would eventually cost the life of the esper. Magic is at the very heart and soul of every esper -- it's what they're made of. Surmisedly, the espers were tricked into giving up their powers or used against their will, and through this process, many died.

The discovery of these horrific events sparked the War of the Magi. Enraged, the espers battled the humans who'd taken their friends and family for their own foul purposes. Naturally magical espers were pitted against artificially magically-enhanced humans: a devastating war followed.

quotes Narshe Elder: 'The legendary conflict that laid waste to the world...' quotes

As the war dwindled to a close, the espers fled to a new world of their own creation.

quotes Ramuh: They feared that if they remained, it would only be a matter of time before their powers were targeted again. quotes

The espers feared correctly. Twenty years prior to the present, Gestahl and others discovered the secret village of the espers. Gestahl's thirst for power -- and the promise of an invincible, magically-infused army -- almost brought on another conflict. But the espers reacted first, creating a gate that would lock the humans out.

Still, some espers were caught and brought to a Gestahlian facility. There, their magical essence was slowly extracted, bringing about the second age of Magitek.

The espers weren't the only ones to experience pain caused by the war. The magi, the people who were infused with magic power derived from the espers, represented the war to the common folk. Soon after the war ended, the magi were rounded up and killed, one by one. Those who escaped founded the village of the magi, Thamasa, which exists even in present day.
