The allies she met, adventured with and fought beside; the enemies she discovered, turned from and fought against -- all of the most important except
for Locke, because treasure hunters deserve their own section.
Celes Chere Both Celes and Terra share a mutual hatred of Gestahl and the Empire. A top general in the Imperial Army,
Celes becomes disillusioned with Gestahlian rule after hearing about the poisoning of Doma. Although it's not known exactly what she does, she ends up almost beaten
to death by members of the Imperial Army in the occupied South Figaro's prison. She's rescued by Locke, and eventually becomes a member of the group. Celes clearly
recognises Terra when they first meet, but Terra doesn't share the same recognition, either by her loss of amnesia or the fact that
she'd been under mind control during the time Celes would have known her. Terra is shocked when she shows her ability to use magic, and Celes explains she was
infused with magic as a child. Wondering if her magic powers might have something to do with her problem experiencing love, Terra
asks Celes whether or not she can experience it, which Celes doesn't take too kindly to being asked about. But the two develop a camaraderie. Terra feels Celes'
pain after Locke blatantly exposes his distrust of her at the Magitek facility. Celes is the first to be concerned about Terra's possible death if the Warring Triad,
creators of the espers, were to be destroyed. At the end of the game, Celes watches over Terra as she throws away her past through throwing away her hairband and letting her
hair and soul run free.
Gestahl The emperor of the Empire is solely responsible for Terra's life up to the present. He considers Terra as merely a means to an end; that end being,
of course, world domination by way of an ultimate power.
When Terra was only a baby, Gestahl took her from her parents. Maduin unconscious and Madeline just barely conscious, neither could do anything to stop him.
In images shown to her by her father, Terra discovers that it was Gestahl who opened the Sealed Gate to the esper world and captured many espers, including her father. He's shown
to be an uncaring and cruel person, looking only to further his own power. When Gestahl, Maduin, Madeline and Terra -- she being an infant at this time -- are sucked out of the espers' world,
Gestahl grabs Terra away from her pleading mother, thinking only of the power he'd gain from a human-esper hybrid. When Madeline attempts to fight back, Gestahl knocks her down, seemingly
for good. All of this is shown to Terra in images from her father after she's already developed a certain level of hatred for using her as he did.
After stealing her away from the happy childhood she could have known, the Emperor proceeds with his plan to create the ultimate army. Terra is thoroughly brainwashed and her
power harnessed outside of her control. Forcibly equipped with a Slave Crown -- an artefact which destroys any self will -- Terra is completely at the mercy of the Emperor. She
is trained as a Magitek Knight in the Imperial Army. Silent and brutal, she gains a nasty reputation as a killing machine. Its
Gestahl's manipulation of her life that obliges her apathetic nature once she breaks free, and prevents her from understanding and taking part in one of life's necessities.
In short, Terra has no love for the emperor, who's used her kin and enslaved her for his own selfish ends.
Leo Christophe Peace-loving and fair, Leo was one of the leading generals of the Imperial Army, much respected by allies and foes alike. Terra first meets the general after agreeing to act
as the ambassador on behalf of a secretly conniving Gestahl. Leo is kind and gentle, and Terra takes to him immediately. On the voyage to the gate that blocks the human world
from the espers', Terra finds she can't sleep and heads above deck to think about love. Leo overhears her, and Terra decides to ask his opinion.
Terra: If a human and an esper can love one another...Do you think a human and I could love each other?
Leo: Of course!
Terra: But...I don't even know what it feels like to love someone.
Leo tells her exactly what she needs to hear: that she's young, and with the experiences she'll face in the years coming, she'll come understand what she seeks.
And Terra does, with the child orphans she comes to care for. After his death, Terra wishes she had the chance to learn more from him.
Terra: General Leo...I think I've begun to understand the things you told me...
Banon Banon is the leader of the rebel group, the Returners. At Locke and Edgar's insistence, Terra meets with him. Banon is at first
very blunt about Terra's role in the world, delimiting her to only the sum of her abilities. But he tells her that no matter what other's may think, no matter how people may try
to use her for her powers, she should know how special her gift of magic is. He is very open about his intentions, and his desperation shows, particularly in his comparison to
her as the ray of light. Banon believes that Terra is, in essence, their savior, the one who will bring about the end of the war. Terra is lost and unsure at
this point, and ultimately the choice is given to the gamer as to whether she chooses to help Banon and the Returners or not. The most important issue her is that Banon gives
Terra the choice to make her own decision, unlike every other person as of then who wanted to use her powers.
Shadow Shadow accidentally overhears Terra and Leo's conversation about love on the trip to the Sealed Gate. A loner and an infamous killer, Shadow comes
and goes as he pleases, never allowing himself to be attached to anyone or any cause. Having decided to lead his life without connections
and emotions, Shadow has only one thing to say to Terra:
Shadow: Terra...There are people in the world who have chosen to kill their own emotions. Remember that.
An interesting parallel: Terra's forced but unwanted indifference versus Shadow's self-imposed impartiality. Although Shadow is warning Terra to be more aware of
who she shares her soul with, he's also showing her that there are people like her out there that have chosen to be the way they are. Perhaps, in a twisted
way, Shadow is telling her that having a lack of emotional response is not necessarily a bad or unwanted thing. Terra doesn't believe this is right for her, but it gives her
an alternate perspective on her situation. In a way, Shadow's words could have been meant to comfort her.
Edgar Figaro The womanizing king of Figaro doesn't take long to make advances toward Terra. Terra, however, reacts strangely, much to his -- and her own --
surprise. Her interactions with Edgar prompt her to recognise she has a problem experiencing certain emotions, leading her on a journey of self-discovery: to find and experience
love. Soon, Edgar discovers her powers, but after the initial shock (and, let's admit it, slight fear) he accepts Terra for who she is. Even so, Edgar
realises the power they hold in having Terra on their side, and though his intentions aren't as evil as Gestahl's, Edgar still wants to use Terra for her abilities. Knowing this
affects Terra on a subconscious level, and she is distant from him and others who think like him. Eventually, as Terra comes into her own, she works around her issues and
comes to trust Edgar and the others, knowing the goodness in their ideals is the most important thing.
