Over the course of the game, Terra undergoes an emotional revolution that effects every part of her life.
Captured by the Empire when but an infant and having her will -- her thoughts, feelings and the very
right to choice -- taken from her, Terra's existence has not been her own. While controlled, Terra
was likely unaware of everything around her. Her abilities were taken advantage of and used outside of her knowledge for evil
purposes. When she is freed, she might as well have been entering a whole new world.
Not helping things is her near complete loss of memory. Terra only remembers her name, and seemingly
nothing else. She doesn't know who she is, who the people around her are, which side is good and which side is bad. She only
knows that everyone around her is seeking the use of her powers.
As such, Terra state of mind more closely resembles a child than an adult. Not only is she naive and ignorant by circumstance, but
she must re-learn how the world works and who she can trust -- all on her own. She is paranoid of everyone around her, even those who
show her kindness. She must assume the worst about people to protect herself. As such, she can be incredibly blunt.
Terra: Locke, right?...Edgar told me about you. Is it true you're a theif?
Initially, her will swings between strong and weak, and she shows contradictory behaviour. At one moment, she can be upfront and challenging,
demanding to know someone's true intentions, while soon after falling prey to a childish fear that belies her outward strength.
Terra: Were those bad people? I...I'm scared...
As she travels with Locke and the others and discovers the world and her role in it anew, Terra is progressively more wary
of people needing her powers, and this becomes increasingly disturbing to her. She is concerned with her lack of emotional response to people,
particularly in romantic situations, but can't bring herself to feel anything. Terra doesn't yet know it, but she's suffering the aftereffects
of being forcibly emotionally vacant for years and years, as well as a hidden tendency to avoid toward anyone who wants to use her in any way
resembling how the Empire did.
When the world is destroyed and Terra finds herself wrapped up in the lives of the orphans she discovers, it's no
wonder why she wants to stay with them. Like her prior comrades, they need her, but in a completely different way: they need her for herself,
not for her magical abilities or her esper heritage or power. This unconditional love is exactly what Terra was searching for.
Terra: I feel like I'm on the verge of understanding something important. It's hard to describe...But the harder I look for the answer, the more I lose my strength to fight.
Terra looses her will to fight because a stronger emotion has taken hold of her. Her hatred and anger are replaced with her pure love for the children. She probably doesn't know it,
but having witnessed the death of the childrens' parents as a sacrifice to protect their children has had a profound effect on her: the concept of battle is no more a neutral thing,
but something to be abhorred and avoided.
Even so, Terra comes to realise that she must fight to protect the children from those who are trying to eliminate them.
Terra: I'll fight! I'll make this world a place where life can flourish, and children can grow up in peace!
Inspired by the love she has for the children and they for her, Terra finds the will to fight again.
