familyBefore Terra's life was taken away from her, she had a family and a home with the espers. Raised by both esper and human parents, she knew only joy, even while her parents -- in particular, her mother -- didn't. Madeline Disgusted and angered by humanity, Madeline retreats from the human world and quite unintentionally finds herself in the world of espers. The espers are startled by the unwanted presence of a human, but allow her to stay and rest for the night. Maduin hears of the human woman and, curious, decides to meet her. Maduin At first unsure of the human, Maduin quickly begins to feel a connection to her, one that is noticed by the esper elder. Even so, he tells her it's probably best for her to return to the human world. The next day, the elder tells Maduin that Madeline has already left, and for some reason he finds himself going after her. At the exit to their world, Maduin finds a hesitant Madeline. He tells her she doesn't have to go after all, and she decides to stay with little hesitation. Over time, their bond grows, and the two become lovers. Soon Madeline is pregnant with Terra, much to both their delights. But secretly Madeline is feeling a lot of pain by the way some of the other espers talk about her, resentful of her simply because she's human. She finds herself blamed for many things she had nothing to do with. When Gestahl envades the esper world, Madeline is blamed. She takes her baby and runs. Maduin is furious with his fellow espers, and heads off after Madeline. But Madeline had already breached the exit when he reaches it, and the elder is preparing a spell that cannot be undone and would lock both Madeline and Maduin out. Maduin races after Madeline anyways, and just as they meet, the winds of the spell knock them out into the human world. Outside, Gestahl is shocked to find a human amidst the espers. Noticing the small bundle Madeline is carrying, he snatches it away.
Maduin is knocked out cold and Madeline is powerless to stop Gestahl. When she struggles, he turns on her and murders her in cold blood. Maduin is taken to a research vacility, where the experiments exacted upon him eventually lead to his death. Terra is brought up with her will torn from her, becoming a deadly, loveless Magitek Elite. Although Terra is never able to know her parents, her father speaks to her from his Magicite, and sends her images telling the story of his love for Madeline, their short time together and the cruelty of the Empire.
