The magical race with powers beyond human comprehension and ability, the espers inspired jealousy in their human
counterparts and would find themselves slowly being wiped out because of it.
Ramuh: Humans and espers are incompatible creatures.
In the current world, there are few espers about. Due to the events of the War of the Magi, and the fact that most espers don't
resemble humans, most choose to live in another world. Only a few who look humanoid, like Ramuh, can live in the human world.
Like the humans a thousand years ago, the Empire under Gestahl sought to make the power of the espers their own to ensure victory in taking over
all realms of the human world. Twenty years prior, Gestahl found the hidden home of the espers, and managed to catch a few. With Cid at the helm of the project, he
oversaw the creation of Magitek technology at the expense of the espers' comfort and freedom. Looked up in capsules that stole all conscious thought
and steadily withdrew the powers within, the espers became like precious batteries to be used and then disposed when they ran dry.
Espers would be drained over time of their powers, and once completely weakened, would be hucked into the basement of the Magitek Research Facility.
However, the espers knew that Gestahl wasn't getting their full power by extracting magical energy from their bodies. The most powerful magic could only be garnered from
Magicite, the physical form of magic left over when an esper dies. But, as Ramuh notes:
Ramuh: If our power is used for destruction, the skies will darken and life with fade from the earth...
Ramuh sees the goodness in Locke and the others, and gives himself up willingly for their cause. Only with the help of the espers' Magicite and the magical powers
they provide can Gestahl and Kefka be defeated.
When the Sealed Gate, the entrance to the espers' world, is opened by Terra, the espers within fly out, uncontrolled. In the process they hurt many and destroy the city of
Vector. They hide in the shrine to the Warring Triad until Terra comes for them. Terra learns that, like what happened to her, once they entered the human world, their
powers became uncontrolled. Terra discovers that her home world might have dampening effects on her and other espers' powers.
the warring triad
The Warring Triad were the three gods who created magic: Demon, Guardian and Fiend. Not only did these gods create magic, but they created the espers as well. As such,
the espers are integrally tied to the Triad, just as magic is. The party first discovers the Warring Triad represented by golden statues found in the mountain range to the east
of Thamasa, the village of the magi:
Strago: It is said that the espers once enshrined images of the gods in a holy place. This must be it...
The gods were known to have fought among themselves, and after creating magic and the espers, decided to turn themselves into stone. Before doing so, they made sure to face
one another so that their powers would be neutralised. Thus they created balance.
The actual gods, frozen in stone, surface on the floating island at Gestahl's and Kefka's direction. Just like their statuesque counterparts, the gods face each other, magical
energy unique to each succumbed in the space between the three. Standing between the three, Kefka is able to command the gods -- or at least their power -- and attack with
magical lightning bolts. The world becomes unbalanced when Kefka forcibly moves the gods out of sync, causing massive damage to
the entire world and resulting in the World of Ruin.
Kefka uses the power of the Triad to become all-powerful himself. In order to defeat him, the party must destroy each of the Triad in turn. But in doing so, they all elliminate
all of the magic and all of the espers in the world.
As Terra is a half-esper, she knowingly faces her possible death. After Kefka and the Warring Triad are destroyed, Terra loses her esper half and becomes fully human.
notable espers
Valigarmanda The esper that unintentionally initiates Terra's journey into self-awareness. Sought after by the Empire for its power, Valigarmanda is targetted
by a small group of Impirial soldiers: Biggs, Wedge and a mind-controlled Terra. But when Terra comes in contact with the esper, she and the esper react, and the artefact that
had been controlling her -- the Slave Crown -- is destroyed, along with her memory. Later, the party returns to the Narshe summit and meets Valigarmanda again. After defeating the
ice-encased esper, it is amazed at the power of humans, and wonders if the War of the Magi is still raging. The party tells the esper they're on a mission
to end the war, and it gives up its power to them.
Ramuh When Terra's esper form is awakened, she flees aimlessly across the world, deeply frightened and in shock. Ramuh, the esper of lightning,
hears her and calls to her. She responds and flies to Zozo, where Ramuh lives. There, Ramuh takes care of her until her friends arrive. Ramuh has lived in the human world, getting by without
trouble because he looks almost exactly like a human. His troubles lie with himself: like a coward, he left his esper friends at the Magitek Research Facility funded by Gestahl, even
knowing what would become of them. Knowing that by helping him he can help his kin, Ramuh sacrifices himself, providing the party with his Magicite.
Shiva & Ifrit Siblings of Ramuh, the ice and fire espers, respectively, were captured by Gestahl and Kefka and drained of their powers
until near death. The party watches as they're dumped onto a junk track and left for dead in the basement of the Magitek Research Facility. The party goes after them,
and the two espers, thinking they're about to fight to the death, battle them. Soon they realise the group has been granted Ramuh's powers, and give up their lives
to become Magicites as well.
Maduin Terra's father, the esper who came to represent the possibility that humans and espers could co-exist peacefully. Maduin allowed a human woman to stay in
the esper world when she wandered in during a storm.
