The Gestahlian Empire is the current ruling government body of much of the world over. Hailing from the capitol city of Vector, Gestahl
planned the expansion of his empire with the aid of his three generals, Kefka Palazzo, Leo Christophe and Celes Chere.
Years before the start of the game, Gestahl lead an invasion of the esper home world after discovering they
held the secret to a power long thought lost: magic. In doing so, Gestahl managed to capture many espers, enevitably changing the life
of one special esper child in particular. Terra, but an infant at the time, was stolen away from her parents and her world, her
mother murdered by Gestahl himself and her father taken in with the other espers.
Gestahl...or Kefka Some debate surrounds the issue of whether or not it was actually Gestahl who found
Terra and killed her mother. Gestahl's actions at the time somewhat contradict every other scene with him in it. Gestahl was
never shown as the murdering type -- but Kefka was. Also, in this scene and only in this scene,
Gestahl laughs in very much the same way Kefka always does. Furthermore, Kefka is known
to have the ability to change his appearance, and at one point in the game actually transforms into a replica of the emperor.
Whether or not this is true for this situation isn't otherwise implied in the game, but the possibility remains.
Gestahl returns to Vector with the captured espers and baby Terra, and immediately sets his top scientist Cid on the task of
discovering how they can extract the espers' magical abilities. Cid develops a method by which to do so, and the espers
are, without their consent or comfort considered, drained of their powers.
With magical power at his disposal, Gestahl begins to develop his dream army: magically-infused warriors and machines with
which he believe he can take over the world. His dreams are realised in both the Magitek Armor
and Cid discovering a way to infuse humans with magic.
At first, the latter doesn't succeed as well as wished for. Kefka is one of the first of whom the method is applied, and
is driven insane by it. Celes Chere, however, is a success.
As Kefka's insanity brews, he becomes disillusioned with his role as a mere general. He keeps his intentions hidden, however,
until opportunity strikes: greatly increasing his power by standing within the Warring Triad on the Floating Continent, Kefka
strikes Gestahl down and takes his place as emperor.
Kefka's rule is much different than Gestahl's. His insanity and illogical hatred of humanity drives him to destroy much of the
world. Terra and the others risk their lives to stop him, scaling his tower and defeating him in battle, and ultimately
bringing about the destruction of the Empire.
